Information on how to report transphobic bullying and harassment at UCL and further resources for support and guidance
At UCL we pride ourselves on inclusivity and diversity and commit to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all our students and staff. We recognise the right of all our staff and students to choose whether to be open about their gender identity and history. Any reported instances of bullying, harassment, or discriminatory behaviours on the basis of an individual’s protected characteristic of gender reassignment or actual or perceived gender identity will be taken seriously and will be considered alongside Prevention of Bullying, Harassment and Sexual Misconduct Policy as potential grounds for disciplinary action. Unacceptable behaviours can take many forms, and may include:
- Making offensive jokes or derogatory or stereotypical remarks, or mocking, mimicking or belittling a person’s protected characteristic, including gender reassignment;
- Outing or threatening to out someone as non-binary or transgender;
- Speculating or gossiping about someone's actual or perceived gender identity;
- Deliberately and persistently refusing to use someone's preferred gendered pronoun (e.g. using 'he' to refer to a trans woman) or continuing to use their former name ('dead naming').
Bullying and harassment are contrary to UCL’s ethos, values and mission and are never acceptable. No member of the UCL community is expected to tolerate such behaviour. These behaviours can have a serious and detrimental impact on an individual’s health and wellbeing and can impact their work or ability to study. UCL encourages its community to report all instances of discrimination, bullying and harassment so that appropriate action can be taken.
Students and staff can use Report + Support to report anonymously, or with their contact details. Full information on the Report + Support process after you submit can be found on Ways to report, and what happens after you submit. If you would like a response or for action to be taken, you are encouraged to fill in the ‘report with contact details’ form. If you would like to receive further support while remaining anonymous, you can enable two-way messaging before submitting your report.
